Beginning with all homes permitted on or after October 1st, 2008, all Built Green registered homes must fully comply with the ENERGY STAR® for New Homes energy efficiency criteria and testing requirements. The ENERGY STAR® for New Homes energy efficiency standards and testing requirements will be the sole method of energy efficiency compliance with the Built Green program. Please see the Guide to the Built Green Checklist, the EnergyStar.gov website, or consult with your Energy Rater for further details on the requirements of the Energy Star® for New Homes program. Be aware that this change requires ENERGY STAR for New Homes energy efficiency criteria only, and does not include their other programs such the ENERGY STAR Indoor Air Package, or Advanced Lighting Package (however, you may still receive points for the ALP through the Checklist). As the program moves towards the effective date of this change, we expect to work closely with the ENERGY STAR for New Homes program regarding co-branding, marketing and other pertinent issues and opportunities. Watch for continued program correspondence through eNews and other modes of communication. We also anticipate working through the Governor’s Energy Office to notify our members of upcoming ENERGY STAR trainings around the state, and to offer similar trainings through Built Green. If you have any suggestions, questions or concerns, please contact Traci D’Alessio, Assistant Director @ 719-339-9639 or tdalessio@earthlink.net |

On May 11, 2008 the National Association of Home Builders, at its Green Building conference in New Orleans, presented Thistle's Blue Vista new home development in Longmont, Colorado with its 2008 National GREEN DEVELOPMENT PROJECT OF THE YEAR AWARD. Blue Vista is one of the first in the country to be both green and affordable to people who earn modest incomes--teachers, health care workers, and retirees. "These honorees are pioneers, artists and building scientists," said NAHB President Sandy Dunn, "They've worked hard to bring sustainable building practices into the mainstream. These winners are not afraid to put great ideas in motion." Added Ray Tonjes, NAHB Green Building subcommittee chair, "NAHB congratulates Blue Vista as a national leader in green building." |

Looking for a way to sell houses in a bad market? Green building is a powerful weapon to differentiate your shiny new product from all those existing homes sporting "for sale" signs or the bland sea of sameness in competitive new-home subdivisions. Green-built houses, neighborhoods and master-planned communities meet an emerging market head-on with a product that really is different. The best green home builders and developers find buyers — even when they're hiding — with marketing concepts that create urgency to buy out of America's fear of economic peril, health hazards and impending environmental calamity. Here's how they do it. To read the full article, please click here. |

With mountain streams flowing and wildflowers blooming, it just seems like we could talk about something other than winder cold for a bit. Sorry- builders in Colorado don’t get much of a summer. They spend a fair amount of effort getting as much as they can done before the next cold blast, so no breaks here either. Frost-protected shallow foundations (FPSFs) have gained some ground over the last few years. More than one building department has turned a suspicious eye their way. But a quick survey of Colorado building officials around the state revealed that to the extent that FPSFs are designed according to industry standards, the resistance to this application ranges from minimal to non-existent. This month’s sales tip features item #15 from the 2008 Built Green Checklist 15. 50% of total installed outdoor lighting (walkway, area, and other outdoor lighting) is solar powered (photovoltaic) based on fixture count.. 2pts. Sales Tip: A solar powered walkway or other outdoor area lighting is a highly visable indication of a builder’s commitment to sustainable design. PV lighting eliminates the need for extensive exterior wiring to remote areas of the property. By using low voltage PV exterior lighting a builder can highlight the beauty of the home at night by using the a free renewable resource, the sun! |
